Robotic Milling Revolutionizes Log Home Construction
Robotic Milling system, installed at a log home builder in Northern Wisconsin
If ever there was an industry that is “built” on tradition, it’s the Log Home building industry. Robotic Solutions recently completed a project incorporates Robotic Milling for a Log Home builder in Northern Wisconsin.
This customer saw an opportunity to bring Log Home building into the 21st Century. They originally purchased a “system” from a robotics integrator, who struggled to integrate a working solution. After the hardware sat for over a year, the client called us out of desperation to see if there was anything we could do to help them out. This type of project is typically full of challenges. By this time, the customer was frustrated, and our challenge was to untangle what had already been (poorly) done. We saw it as an opportunity to enter into a new market segment, and boy, are we glad we took it on.
Because of our background in CAM solutions, we looked at the project in its entirety. Rather than simply getting their hardware working, we also recommended some software solutions that have completely reshaped how these homes are designed, manufactured, and built.
The system has been operational for about 2 months as of the time of this article being written. They’re still learning as they go, increasing their productivity every day. So far, they feel confident that they are going to be able to use their robot to mill logs 2-3 times faster than they were able to mill them by hand.
If you’re looking to build a log cabin or log home in the north woods of Wisconsin, there’s going to be a good chance it was built in part by one of our robotic milling systems!
